Joanna Commings – A contemporary, intuitive artist

Impressionistic Landscape and Seascape Painter

I am a contemporary artist specialising in impressionistic, intuitive landscape and seascape paintings, inspired by mood, atmosphere, and the emotional feeling of a place. My work is increasingly influenced by abstraction, allowing colour, light, and movement to take precedence over precise detail.

Light is central to my painting practice. Rather than focusing on exact outlines, I am drawn to the way light creates drama, depth, and atmosphere within a landscape. My aim is to evoke feeling and engagement through the play of light and the intensity or softness of colour.

I create original acrylic landscape paintings on canvas, depicting the natural world across all seasons and weather conditions. My subjects include coastlines, rivers, canals, woodland, moorland, and expansive skies.

While I prefer not to paint outdoors in the UK climate, I regularly sketch on location using charcoal, pencil, and oil pastels, alongside taking panoramic reference photographs. These studies form the foundation for developing finished paintings back in my studio.

My work is inspired by the effects of sunlight through foliage, shifting clouds, reflections on water, and the movement of the sea. Having spent many years living on the North Cornish coast, I continue to return there for inspiration. Now based in Somerset, I draw from a rich and varied landscape, with easy access to the coasts of Devon, Dorset, and Cornwall.

My paintings are exhibited in galleries across London, Devon, Dorset, Cornwall, Somerset, and Hampshire. I accept commissions for landscape and portrait paintings and also offer one-to-one art tuition from my studio.
